Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare by unveiling a donated new Neonatal Ward and an upgraded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Asaba. This project aims to enhance medical care for newborns, providing advanced resources to address the critical needs of infants requiring specialized treatment.

The newly commissioned facilities are part of NLNG’s corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on boosting healthcare infrastructure. By equipping the FMC with state-of-the-art equipment, NLNG hopes to drastically reduce infant mortality rates in the region and improve overall health outcomes for newborns, as Nigeria accounts for 20% of global maternal and child deaths.

The ICU is equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to care for premature and critically ill infants. These facilities include state-of-the-art neonatal and ICU suites, recovery rooms, preparation zones, automated doors, a dedicated nurses’ station, and a family lounge.

The project is a collaborative effort involving key stakeholders, including the healthcare sector, government bodies, and the local community. This collaboration underscores the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in the health sector.

Health professionals at FMC Asaba are set to undergo specialized training to operate the new equipment effectively. This training is essential to ensure that the staff can deliver the best possible care and maximize the potential of the new facilities.

The unveiling of the neonatal ICU units marks a milestone in NLNG’s ongoing efforts to support healthcare advancements. As these facilities become operational, they are expected to support numerous families while setting a benchmark for future healthcare projects in Nigeria.

In addition to the neonatal ICU, NLNG has promised to continue its investment in health and other vital sectors, aiming to foster a more prosperous and healthier community in Asaba and beyond. This commitment aligns with broader national objectives to enhance healthcare access and quality for all citizens.

“This is not charity, it is nation-building. It is about ensuring that no Nigerian child dies for lack of oxygen or basic intensive care.”

    Henry Obih, NLNG Board Member

The unveiling signifies more than just infrastructure development; it reflects a dedication to human life and the well-being of future generations, laying a foundation for improved pediatric care across the region.
