VolkerRail has been awarded a significant contract worth £19.9 million to enhance signalling structures in the North West of England. This project is set to improve the railway infrastructure and boost efficiency across the region.

The contract, which is a vital part of the wider efforts to upgrade the area’s rail network, involves a range of improvements to existing signalling systems. These upgrades are essential for increasing reliability and safety for both passengers and freight services. By modernizing these systems, the project aims to support the anticipated growth in rail traffic over the coming years.

VolkerRail will work closely with Network Rail, the owner and infrastructure manager of most of the rail network in Great Britain, to execute these improvements. Their collaboration seeks to minimize disruptions while ensuring that upgrades are conducted efficiently and safely.

The scope of the project includes replacing structures, signalling gantries, and installing new, state-of-the-art technology. These enhancements are expected to streamline train operations, reduce delays, and maintain the network’s performance standards.

This contract is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the rail infrastructure in the North West, a region that plays a crucial role in the UK’s transportation network. The upgrades will not only provide immediate benefits but also lay the groundwork for future advancements in rail technology.

VolkerRail will conduct other activities such as piling and ground investigations for new signal foundations. Additional tasks include comprehensive testing and commissioning of the upgraded infrastructure. Completion of the project is set for July 2027, with initial commissioning due to begin in January 2026.

Once completed, these enhancements will provide a more robust and responsive rail network. This is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy by improving access and connectivity, thus facilitating growth and development.

The project, which aligns with government priorities for improving infrastructure, demonstrates a strategic approach to modernizing the UK’s railway system. VolkerRail’s expertise and commitment to quality highlight their role as a leader in rail construction and engineering.

Overall, this £20 million contract represents not just an investment in physical infrastructure but also in the future of rail transportation, ensuring that the North West remains a vital link in the UK’s transportation network.
