Micron Technology has appointed Gilbane Building Co. to lead preconstruction and site enabling work for the country’s largest semiconductor fabrication facility ever. This facility is set to be a transformative development, reflecting a substantial investment of $100 billion. The 1,300-acre site is currently undergoing site clearing and grading work. It will host four fabrication facilities and the largest ever cleanroom space at 2.4 million sq ft.

The project, located in White Pine Commerce Park, will span four phases and is expected to conclude in the 2040s. Initially, Micron plans to allocate $20 billion to the site’s development by the end of the decade, focusing on innovative 1-beta (1β) process technology for dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips.

New York state has supported this endeavor with substantial investment incentives worth $5.5 billion, a part of the CHIPS and Science Act, promoting U.S. tech industry growth and reducing foreign dependency. Other industry leaders like Intel and Texas Instruments are also expanding in response to similar incentives.

Micron’s project is anticipated to create approximately 50,000 jobs statewide, with 9,000 positions at Micron itself. This job creation highlights Micron’s commitment to long-term economic contributions and local workforce integration.

Sustainability is also a key focus. Micron is committed to using all renewable electricity at the facility and 100% water reuse, recycling, and restoration.

This massive undertaking is more than a regional development. It serves as a critical component of the United States’ broader strategy to diversify and enhance its semiconductor production capabilities, addressing global supply chain vulnerabilities.
