UltraTech Cement has brought 2.7 million tonnes per annum of new grinding capacity online at its Aligarh plant in Uttar Pradesh, adding fresh supply to one of India’s most active construction markets. Total grinding capacity at Aligarh is now 4Mta. The company’s overall capacity in Uttar Pradesh is 13.1Mta, total domestic grey cement manufacturing capacity is 191.36Mta, and total global cement capacity is 196.76Mta.
The commissioning places another large-scale unit into service for the Aditya Birla Group, which has been expanding its footprint to meet steady demand from housing, transportation and industrial projects across northern India. With the Aligarh unit operational, UltraTech can deliver more finished cement closer to end users in and around the Delhi-National Capital Region and throughout western and central Uttar Pradesh, helping shorten lead times and reduce logistics costs.
Grinding plants convert clinker and other constituents into finished cement, the material that goes into concrete for roads, bridges, buildings and water infrastructure. By increasing grinding capacity, producers can respond faster to shifts in local demand and optimize product mixes, including blended cements that use supplementary materials to conserve clinker and lower the embodied carbon of each tonne produced.
Commissioning a facility of this size involves mechanical completion, power-up, process testing and a controlled ramp-up to rated output. UltraTech’s move signals that the Aligarh unit has passed those steps and is ready to supply the market. Bringing the unit online also gives the company added flexibility to balance production across its network during peak construction periods.
The location is strategic. Aligarh sits along key freight corridors connecting major consumption centers. Additional capacity at this node allows UltraTech to improve service levels for ready-mix producers, contractors and distributors who rely on consistent volumes and predictable delivery schedules for large pours and time-sensitive projects.
UltraTech and its peers have been investing in modern mills, material handling and packing systems designed to improve energy efficiency and product quality. Newer grinding technology typically offers lower specific power consumption and tighter control over particle size distribution, translating to performance benefits in concrete and potential cost savings over the life of the equipment.
For buyers, the startup of another high-capacity unit in Uttar Pradesh is poised to support availability during busy construction seasons and can help stabilize regional pricing by easing supply bottlenecks. For project owners, stronger local supply reduces the risk of delays tied to material shortages and long-distance transport.
India’s cement market has grown alongside public investment in highways, rail, urban development and industrial corridors. Moves such as the Aligarh commissioning indicate producers remain focused on aligning capacity with that pipeline, banking on continued demand from both public works and residential construction.
UltraTech’s latest step adds meaningful weight to its northern India portfolio and underscores the company’s emphasis on staged, market-focused capacity additions. As the Aligarh plant ramps to full output, stakeholders across the region can expect more options and greater reliability in cement supply.
