ACCIONA Energía, a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, has announced a major initiative in battery energy storage. The company plans to construct a 1GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Malgarida photovoltaic (PV) complex located in the Atacama Desert of Chile. This new development forms a crucial part of ACCIONA’s strategic efforts to enhance sustainable energy solutions and support Chile’s transition to green energy.
The battery system will allow for the delivery of 200MW of power for up to five hours. This will enable the solar energy generated at Malgarida to be stored, managed, and dispatched at different times of the day.
ACCIONA aims to address growing energy demands while mitigating the challenges posed by traditional power sources. With the incorporation of advanced technologies, the BESS will contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing the integration of renewable energy into the national power supply.
As renewable energy becomes more significant globally, the role of energy storage systems is expanding. They are essential in managing the intermittent supply associated with wind and solar energy, ensuring that clean power is consistently available. ACCIONA’s commitment to this project reflects its broader goal of promoting a sustainable energy future by leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering regional development.
The BESS is scheduled for commissioning in early 2027. This project is among the largest battery storage installations in South America.
ACCIONA currently operates a total installed capacity of 922MW in Chile. Their portfolio in Chile includes three wind farms and five PV plants. Three additional BESS projects are planned in Chile, which will total 1.5GWh, and are all linked with its PV plants.
These projects will help maximize Chile’s daytime solar generation and better match energy supply with demand. Utility-scale battery energy storage systems are essential for integrating renewable energy.
Overall, ACCIONA’s initiative exemplifies a proactive response to the increasing need for sustainable energy solutions and underscores the importance of strategic investments in renewable technology to drive future growth and efficiency.
