Alight and Neoen have successfully commissioned Sweden’s largest solar farm at Hultsfred Airport in Småland. This 100 MWp solar farm will deliver renewable energy to H&M through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The solar farm consisting of 174,000 photovoltaic panels installed around the runway covers approximately 130 hectares (~321 acres) and will generate approximately 100 GWh of electricity. This project is poised to generate enough electricity to power around 18,000 homes annually, significantly contributing to Sweden’s renewable energy targets and reducing carbon emissions. The collaboration has brought together cutting-edge solar technology and locally sourced expertise to maximize efficiency and environmental benefits.
Alight, a leader in solar technology, and Neoen, known globally for its renewable energy projects, have merged their strengths to ensure the project’s success. This commissioning not only highlights their shared commitment to sustainable energy but also showcases Sweden’s capacity to support large-scale renewable projects. The solar farm was built by EPC Equans Energy and Storage – Solkompaniet consortium and is connected to the E.ON local grid distribution system in Hultsfred. The solar park is a testament to innovative engineering and strategic foresight.
“Bringing this solar farm into operation with our partner Neoen and PPA offtaker H&M represents a milestone for us and demonstrates that the Swedish market can deliver large-scale, unsubsidised renewable energy fast” said Warren Campbell, CEO at Alight. “It’s a landmark achievement in Swedish renewable power production.”
The construction of the Hultsfred solar park involved numerous local partnerships, accentuating the importance of community engagement and local workforce development in large-scale projects. This approach not only bolsters local economies but also ensures that the surrounding community is an integral part of the transition to renewable energy.
Looking ahead, Alight and Neoen are exploring further opportunities for collaboration to expand their renewable energy portfolios. Their ongoing efforts are expected to facilitate more projects that will enhance energy security and support sustainable development goals globally.
As the solar park begins its operations, it sets a benchmark for future projects in terms of scale and impact, providing a robust framework for harnessing solar energy effectively. This achievement serves as an encouraging example for other regions aiming to transition towards a greener energy landscape.
