Boskalis and Allseas, two prominent companies in the maritime and engineering sectors, have teamed up to secure a significant project in Taiwan from CPC Corporation Taiwan worth $1.38 billion USD. This consortium will oversee the installation of a new 232-kilometer gas pipeline (YT2), which will run parallel to an existing pipeline (YT1), connecting the Yongan LNG terminal in southwest Taiwan with the Tongxiao transfer station in the northwest.
The project involves laying a subsea pipeline that will transport natural gas across Taiwan’s waters. This undertaking is crucial for Taiwan as it aims to enhance its energy supply and move towards more sustainable sources. The government is committed to expanding its natural gas infrastructure, hoping to reduce reliance on coal and increase cleaner energy consumption to meet environmental goals.
Boskalis, known for its expertise in dredging and marine construction, will contribute its vast experience in offshore engineering to ensure smooth operations. Their work will include handling the landfalls, microtunnelling activities, nearshore and offshore trenching, backfilling, and rock installation for 34 pipeline crossings. To achieve this, Boskalis will deploy two large hopper dredgers, a large backhoe dredger, and a subsea rock installation vessel.
Allseas, a leader in offshore pipeline installation, brings specialized technology and innovative techniques to handle complex subsea challenges. They will be responsible for pipeline installation and pre-commissioning, including the pre-lay installation of concrete mattresses, utilizing two of the most advanced pipelay vessels.
This collaboration highlights a growing trend in the engineering world where companies with complementary strengths partner to tackle large-scale projects. By combining their expertise, Boskalis and Allseas aim to efficiently navigate the technical challenges presented by Taiwan’s unique maritime environment.
The construction phase is expected to commence in 2026, with completion anticipated in 2028. This timing aligns with Taiwan’s energy strategy of increasing natural gas usage to address both economic and environmental concerns.
The project is projected to create numerous jobs in the region, giving a boost to the local economy. It also sets a precedent for future international collaborations in Taiwan, showcasing the nation as an attractive destination for global engineering projects.
Successful completion of this pipeline is expected to significantly increase Taiwan’s gas import capacity. This aligns with the government’s vision of achieving a diversified energy mix, securing energy independence, and ensuring a consistent energy supply for its industries and citizens.
The Boskalis and Allseas consortium is poised to make a lasting impact on Taiwan’s infrastructure landscape. By combining their strengths, they are set to deliver a state-of-the-art pipeline system, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for the region.
