Frankfurt Airport has recently enhanced its airfreight capabilities with the opening of a new DHL warehouse near Gate 31 in CargoCity South. This warehouse is capable of handling up to 300,000 metric tons of cargo annually. This is a significant step forward in expanding the airport’s logistics infrastructure and improving its airfreight services.
The newly launched facility, operated by DHL, supports efficient cargo handling, a crucial component for meeting global demand. By integrating this warehouse with existing logistics services, Frankfurt Airport is poised to handle increased cargo volumes, thereby strengthening its position as a major hub in Europe.
Located strategically within the airfreight center, the facility is designed to streamline operations with advanced technology and optimized processes. DHL will benefit from cutting-edge sorting and processing systems, ensuring quicker turnover and greater efficiency for their shipments.
This expansion is the result of a collaborative effort between Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, and DHL, aiming to enhance service offerings and cater to the growing needs of international trade. The warehouse is expected to increase the airport’s capacity to manage diverse cargo types, from express parcels to larger, more complex freight.
The strategic location of this new DHL warehouse allows for seamless integration with existing transportation networks, facilitating quicker distribution across Europe and beyond. This advantage is crucial for businesses relying on fast delivery and consistent service, ultimately contributing to a more reliable supply chain.
Anke Giesen, Executive Director Retail and Real Estate at Fraport AG, says: “The launch of full operations by DHL Global Forwarding at the state-of-the-art airfreight warehouse is a major milestone in the ongoing development of Frankfurt Airport as an airfreight hub. Under the CargoHub Masterplan, Fraport aims to increase cargo volumes at FRA by some 50 percent to around three million metric tons of airfreight per year. In this context, the new warehouse is a major project for Fraport’s real estate development team, and it’s now been completed on schedule.”
The new facility includes 24,500 square meters of warehouse space. In total, the warehouse has 54 gates and truck docks. The facility also has 25 parking spaces for trucks and 185 parking spaces for other vehicles, 20 of which are equipped with e-charging stations. A large photovoltaic system is currently being built on the warehouse roof. The energy produced will be fed into the airport grid upon commissioning.
The opening of the DHL warehouse is a testament to Frankfurt Airport’s dedication to supporting global logistics and trade. It serves as a significant milestone, highlighting the importance of continuous development in infrastructure to meet the demands of modern commerce.
Through this facility, the airport not only enhances its capacity but also ensures it remains a competitive player in the international freight industry. As global commerce continues to grow, such strategic investments are vital for maintaining efficiency and connectivity in the logistics sector.
