HDR and Jacobs have been awarded a significant $166 million contract for design and engineering services on a major rail project in New York City. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) selected the firms to oversee the initial phases of the Interborough Express (IBX) project.
The IBX aims to establish a vital transit link across Brooklyn and Queens, connecting several existing rail lines. By enhancing connectivity, it hopes to shorten travel times and provide commuters with a more efficient transportation option. The new corridor will stretch approximately 14 miles, linking communities that historically lacked direct transit services. It will have 19 stations and connect to 17 different subway lines and trains, 50 bus routes and two LIRR stations.
HDR and Jacobs are entrusted with delivering preliminary design and environmental review services. These phases are crucial for ensuring the project complies with regulatory requirements and addresses community needs. The team will also explore how the rail project can integrate and interact with existing transportation infrastructures.
One of the key aspects of this project is its focus on sustainability and minimizing environmental impact. By using existing rail tracks, the IBX intends to reduce the need for extensive new construction. This approach is expected to limit disruptions and reduce costs, demonstrating the MTA’s commitment to eco-friendly urban development.
Additionally, the firms will engage with local communities to gather feedback and address any concerns about the project’s impact. This inclusive process is intended to ensure the new transit line meets the diverse needs of the population it will serve, providing broader access to jobs, education, and other essential services.
Design work will kick off this summer, focusing on communication and signal systems, vehicles and tracks. Civil engineering work will include station and retaining wall plans, bridge reconstruction and design of the operations facility and storage yard.
The ambitious IBX project is part of New York City’s broader strategy to enhance public transit across the metropolitan area. It aims to improve mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and decrease the city’s carbon footprint. As the project progresses, it is expected to have a transformative effect on how residents navigate the city, promising more efficient and sustainable travel options.
The contract awarded to HDR and Jacobs showcases the MTA’s dedication to fostering collaboration with leading engineering firms to bring this vision to fruition. The success of the IBX could serve as a model for future urban transit projects, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning, community involvement, and sustainability in modern infrastructure development.
