Minnesota Power is moving forward with plans to develop a significant renewable energy project in North Dakota. The Longspur Wind Project is set to consist of 45 turbines and have a capacity of 200 megawatts. It will be located in Morton and Mercer Counties in the west-central part of the state, adjacent to the company’s existing Bison Wind Energy Center.

This development represents a substantial investment in wind energy, which aligns with Minnesota Power’s ongoing commitment to sustainable energy sources, including their ambition to achieve 90% renewable energy generation by 2035. The project is anticipated to create an array of benefits, including economic growth and job creation in the region, as well as a boost in clean energy production.

Minnesota Power, a division of ALLETE Inc., will oversee the project’s construction and operation. The project will tap into existing infrastructure, including substations and the 465-mile transmission line linking central North Dakota to northeastern Minnesota.

North Dakota, known for its significant wind potential due to its open plains and favorable weather conditions, is an ideal location for such a project. The state has been progressively increasing its investment in renewable energy, and the Longspur Wind Project is expected to contribute to this trend, providing clean energy to meet growing demands.

Construction is expected to commence in 2026, with operations projected to begin by the end of 2027. Multiple approvals at both state and county levels are still required.

The project will not only benefit the local economy but also support Minnesota Power’s customers by providing reliable and renewable power. The electricity generated from the Longspur Wind Project is anticipated to supply 150,000 customers across northeastern Minnesota.

In addition to the economic and environmental benefits, the project demonstrates how utility companies are increasingly prioritizing investments in renewable energy. These efforts are in response to regulatory pressures and growing public demand for clean energy solutions.

Overall, Minnesota Power’s Longspur Wind Project in North Dakota highlights a concerted effort to harness the power of wind, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
