RWE, a prominent player in the energy sector, has successfully secured bids for two major solar projects in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, following the latest round of the German Federal Network Agency’s solar tender.
A large scale solar plant will be built in the Manheimer Bucht in the Rhein-Erft district and the photovoltaic project that is currently under construction alongside the A44n motorway will be expanded. The new solar farms will generate enough electricity to power 11,300 German households. Construction is expected to begin during 1H26 and commissioning is expected by the end of 2026.
RWE’s involvement in these projects underscores its commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The company is recognized for its substantial investments in sustainable energy solutions, and these new ventures align with its broader strategy to increase its solar capacity. By doing so, RWE aims to support Germany’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
The solar tender initiative is part of Germany’s larger plan to accelerate green energy production across the country. It is designed to encourage more investment by providing structured opportunities for companies to propose and develop solar projects. Through these tenders, Germany hopes to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and meet its ambitious climate targets.
The solar plants being constructed along the A44n motorway between the cities of Bedburg and Jüchen have a total capacity of 86.5 MWp and are expected to go into operation by the end of 2025. The second extension phase, with a capacity of 19.9 MWp, is planned for 2026. 30,600 solar modules will be installed on recultivated land at the Garzweiler opencast mine in the municipality of Jüchen. Solar projects alongside motorways generally have faster approval processes.
The Manheimer Bucht solar farm will be built in the southern part of the Hambach opencast mine and will be comprised of about 26,500 solar modules. The solar farm will have a capacity of 17.2 MWp.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, commented: “These projects reflect our ongoing commitment to the energy transition in the Rhenish region, and we are keeping up the pace with the expansion of our solar portfolio. We are already operating seven major solar farms in the region, some in combination with battery storage systems. For the two new solar farms we are also examining whether it will be possible to put battery systems in place.”
In recent years, RWE has increasingly focused on renewable energy, operating seven solar farms in the Rhenish region. The company has set clear goals to expand its solar and wind energy capabilities as part of its sustainability commitments. These projects are anticipated to play a pivotal role in the company’s long-term energy strategy, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
The German solar market remains highly competitive, with numerous companies vying for a share in the burgeoning sector. RWE’s successful bids highlight its competitive edge and ability to deliver substantial projects efficiently. This win not only strengthens RWE’s position in the market but also contributes to its reputation as a leader in the renewable energy transition.
As RWE moves forward with these projects, it will continue to focus on innovation and efficiency. The company’s experience and expertise in the energy sector will be crucial in overcoming potential challenges and maximizing the impact of these solar installations.
These developments mark another milestone in Germany’s journey toward widespread renewable energy adoption, showcasing the growing importance of solar power in the country’s energy landscape. Through such initiatives, Germany is set to make significant progress in reducing emissions and promoting sustainable development.
