BC Hydro has successfully commissioned the final generating unit on the Site C project. Located on the Peace River near Fort St. John, the Site C Dam represents a substantial development in Canada’s hydroelectric capacity.
After years of planning and construction, the completion of Site C is expected to provide reliable power to homeowners and businesses across British Columbia. This project has the capacity to generate more than 1,100 megawatts of electricity, which can power approximately 500,000 homes annually. Its completion strengthens the province’s ability to meet growing energy demands with sustainable sources.
The operation of Site C involves an earth-fill dam and a powerhouse with six generating units. Construction began in 2015 with the first generating unit coming online in 2024.
Site C will play a crucial role in supporting the province’s transition to cleaner energy forms, aligning with broader efforts to combat climate change. As British Columbia continues to grow, projects like Site C can ensure energy demands are met responsibly.
“Bringing the final generating unit online is a proud moment for everyone at BC Hydro,” said Charlotte Mitha, BC Hydro President and CEO. “Site C represents years of dedication, innovation, collaboration and overcoming challenges. Now that Site C is in full operation, it will serve our customers for the next 100 years and play a critical role in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity system.”
The completion of Site C may also influence future hydroelectric projects, setting a precedent for large-scale renewable energy initiatives in Canada. As the world shifts toward sustainable energy sources, the success and challenges of Site C offer valuable lessons for future undertakings.
The remaining construction work on the project will include completing the powerhouse and generating station, finishing paving on access roads, final equipment commissioning and addressing any deficiencies.
