Southwest China’s largest natural gas power plant has been fully commissioned, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy infrastructure. Located in Shuitu New City of Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area, this facility is designed to harness the area’s abundant natural gas resources, providing a cleaner and more sustainable energy solution. It was designed by Energy China’s Southwest Institute, constructed by Tianjin Electric Power Construction, and commissioned by the North China Electric Power Research Institute.

The power plant is anticipated to be a major player in China’s energy sector, generating about 10 billion kWh annually. It aims to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions by offering an alternative to coal-based energy, saving 1.3 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 3.3 million tonnes per year. As China seeks to transition towards greener energy sources, projects like this are essential to meeting national climate goals.

The plant’s completion involved multiple phases of construction and testing to ensure it meets safety and efficiency standards. Engineering teams undertook rigorous assessments throughout the commissioning process. This is vital to ensure the plant can reliably deliver energy to millions in the surrounding areas. The No. 4 unit of the Huaneng Chongqing Liangjiang Gas-Fired Power Plant Phase II project successfully completed a 168-hour full-load trial operation on its first attempt. Phase II includes two world-class H-class gas-steam combined cycle peak-shaving and condensing units. Phase I was completed and operational at the end of 2014 and consists of two F-class gas-steam combined cycle cogeneration units.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the plant is expected to boost local economic growth. It has created numerous jobs during the construction phase, and its operational phase will sustain many long-term positions. Furthermore, the plant will ensure energy security in the region by stabilizing electricity supply and lowering dependence on coal and oil.

The plant features advanced technology to maximize efficiency and reduce waste. By using cutting-edge equipment, it can convert natural gas into electricity with minimal environmental impact. This technological innovation reflects a broader trend within the industry towards more sustainable practices.

Looking forward, the success of this plant may pave the way for future projects, inspiring similar initiatives across other regions in China. As the country continues its journey towards a cleaner energy future, natural gas power plants will likely play a crucial role, benefitting both the environment and the economy.
